Little Women
Directed by Greta Gerwig
Year 2019
Lady Bird was a promising debut, but it was Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women that convinced me a new major player with an original voice had arrived. I’d seen two previous versions of this story, but from the start Gerwig’s script looked at the March sisters and their familiar story from a different slant that was more interesting than a straight adaptation. Then as a director, she cast a perfect blend of familiar names and rising stars. I smile at a number of unwritten acting moments, like Florence Pugh dropping popcorn or Timothée Chalamet trying to not get his shoes wet at the beach. With her crew, it’s a film that doesn’t look like it was done on the cheap, but doesn’t get over-complicated with period detail either. A warm and cozy balance that makes this a nice film to return to and tonally the opposite of Barbie’s bright musical palette, but we’ll get to that film later.
