#194 Angel Heart
Directed by Alan Parker
Year 1987
Yesterday, I wrote about Jacob’s Ladder and these two movies are very similar. Again, the first and last story points are related and make sense of everything that happens in the middle. Again the main character seems to be sliding away from reality, and both film have a rich, moody style that is more important to the film’s success than the substance. The story didn’t need the New Orleans setting – the book takes place in New York – but that makes Angel Heart a lot of flash to draw from. The end result is equally goofy and sincere. Usually that’s a recipe for disaster, but it’s a very entertaining ride. Also, it’s good to remember Mickey Rourke’s talent this early in his career and to see De Niro working without a Marty.
