#195 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

Directed by David Lynch

Year 1992

Anyone who discovers and loves the world of David Lynch will see his world of Twin Peaks as one story broken into three different formats. There’s the series, which starts strong and loses its way as Lynch becomes less involved in Season 2. There’s the mini-series, Lynch’s final project where he had complete creative control to build his magnum opus. In between is the movie, which exists in two different cuts and after a meandering start drills down hard into the final days of its heart and soul, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). That means fans hungering for more of Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) were undoubtedly disappointed by his brief appearance, but after 20 minutes of prologue this becomes Laura’s story.

As expected, Lynch is not interested in telling you what happened, why it happened, or what it all means. He gives context to his themes of innocence corrupted and the dichotomy of good and evil, with nightmare imagery and audio stimulation. Lynch crafts an unsettling, dangerous and bizarre world with little of his quirky humor to undercut the darkness. Laura’s world is morally confused, shrouded in fantasy and mystery and conspiratorial intrigue. A void into which the young woman is swallowed up.
