#202 A Quiet Place

Directed by John Krasinski

Year 2018

A couple of markers here. We are 200 films in, more than enough for a large Marathon of classics if you’re interested in Horror/Thrillers. 200 films is just the tip of the iceberg. The next 100 include a couple of Silent Films, a couple of TV Specials, a couple of Netflix Miniseries and four titles more recent than this. Another thing to note is that I know people who worked on this film, so I remind you this isn’t a purely personal list but aggregated from various trusted sources with my rating tossed into the formula.

The concept works so smoothly because quiet creates tension and tension is the friend of a good Horror/Thriller. Nothing about the film feels forced for effect, including the family dynamics. Following an opening that defines the danger, the first half shows the steps the family has learned to take to reduce their noise levels, including preparing for a new baby. With all that established, the back half is a thrill ride built on all the defenses being tested. The film runs with no brakes right up to the final image.
