#206 Kill List

Directed by Ben Wheatley

Year 2011

When writing an opinion on a movie I always take the viewpoint of “how much do I think another person would like this movie?” With Kill List, there’s really no way to feel confident in the recommendation. The movie has very intriguing plotting, excellent performances and a mood of mystery. It was made with a great deal of talent and confidence. Few directors can spend so much running time holding back on payoffs without becoming dull. Little bits of interesting information come out in nearly every scene, and kept me very interested in where things were headed.

As the film headed towards its conclusion, I thought I had finally gotten ahead of it. I knew which conflicts needed to be resolved and what would make for the most interesting climactic situation. Instead, the film makes its most surprising move, Where you might say the film goes completely off the rails. I certainly understand having this reaction. But I dunno. I mean, would it have been better if the film did exactly what I was expecting? Certainly not. Is the ending a complete betrayal of everything that went before? Actually, no. As I think about it, what happens still makes sense.

The film has a lot of support, which is why it ranks so high. So, I guess most people are satisfied by the end. Or, maybe they appreciate the challenge of wresting with an unexpected conclusion. …most people. I’ve also encountered some who despise the ending, find it confusing or unsatisfying. It’s like a slap in the face. Many at least enjoy the journey up to that point, then opinions are wildly split.
