#203 Shutter

Directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom

Year 2004

Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom are as ubiquitous to Thai Horror as Song Kang-ho is to South Korean cinema. Their names are on more than half of the popular titles: The Medium, Pee Mak, Alone, Phobia & Phobia 2. Shutter was the big bang, combining the evolving mystery of Ringu with the numerous ghostly scares of Ju-On. If you’ve seen any Asian horror movie from the 1990s and 2000s you’ll recognize the familiar elements. Long-haired ghosts with a grudge carry out their revenge through ordinary objects, often basic technology. The filmmakers don’t come up with much that’s new, but they know how to create a scary moment and this film has a lot of them. That’s why it ranks so high though it’s pretty obscure. It doesn’t have a hook to raise interest, but if you watch it you’ll probably be impressed by how effective it is.
