Thomas Nigel Kneale, a writer of Thrillers that blended Horror and Science Fiction was best known for creating the character Professor Bernard Quatermass. He wrote the screenplay for this Quatermass adventure, one of the very best films produced by Hammer Studios. Quatermass films ingeniously move their preposterous plots forwards with a series of supernatural threats handled in a very scientific manner. The films seem more intelligent than others in the genre because the characters convincingly come off as smart, and the constant twists unfold the story like a grand mystery. The end result is something like an exceptional episode of Doctor Who or The X-Files. Of the series of films (which can be experienced in any order), I have a special fondness for the pulp thrills of 1957’s Enemy From Space, but this one has the best mystery, the best effects and the best Quatermass.
