School of Rock

Directed by Richard Linklater

Year 2003

Our motto here is that Great Films are Assembled by Crew, and sometimes it’s the perfect star vehicle that raises the profile of everyone involved. That’s the case when writer Mike White (White Lotus) was inspired by his neighbor Jack Black to create School of Rock. Black is a particular talent, and no film has been as tailor-made for him as this. It then got to director Richard Linklater, who encourages collaboration with his cast, especially useful when working with children… and Jack Black.

If you’re looking to make an iconic movie, it needs to have technical elements that an audience will visually connect to the film. Such as the Costume Design by Karen Patch (The Royal Tenenbaums) Make-up by Bernadette Mazur (Severance) and Alan D’Angerio (The Silence of the Lambs). The result is a mainstream success with artistic credibility everyone keeps on their resume. Compare that to Bernie (2011), which reunited Linklater and Black. It’s arguably a better film and showed a side of Black people didn’t think he had in him, but even now is barely known to the public.
