Everything Everywhere All At Once
Directed by Daniel Scheinert, Daniel Kwan
Year 2022
Proof of the evolution of the people who vote for the Oscars, EEAAO was released in the Spring of 2022 and had so many ideas, layers and talking points people were still discovering it at the years’ end. A surreal comedy centered around family tensions, especially between mother and daughter, within a Chinese family. This is grafted on the freshest take on what a “multiverse” could be at a time when Marvel was desperately trying to explain the concept with cautious steps and ten times the budget. It’s indulgent and chaotic, the kind of film where I wonder if the crew had a firm grasp of what they were working on. How many department heads understood the entire vision and how many had trouble seeing how their department fit into the whole bagel. (Jamie Lee Curtis said she didn’t understand the movie until she saw the completed film at the premiere.)
