The moment the nominees for Best Actor were announced, people who watch movies and follow Awards shows knew a mistake had been made. Five fine performances, none as good as Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems. Matt Singer remarked, “It’s just too bad not a single member of the Academy watched this movie. If they had, Sandler would have been the first unanimous choice for Best Actor in the history of the Oscars.” Safdie films are two-hour panic attacks and Sandler was the rapidly beating heart of this one. Characters in Safdie films suffer more stress and anxiety in a few days than I’ve had in my entire life. They must be exhausted all the time. (A lot of what I’m posting here carries over to Josh’s follow-up Marty Supreme, but that one is in a controversial place right now so I swapped it for this and pushed Marty down the road.)
