Robocop

Directed by Paul Verhoeven

Year 1987

I think whatever approach I take to a movie that qualifies for this list can be applied to Robocop. A film from my youth that inspired me to want to make movies. A filmmaker from another country bringing their non-Hollywood sensibilities to a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster. A technical marvel where a fresh idea is executed on a somewhat limited budget that still packs in lots of iconic visuals (Director of Photography Jost Vacano) and special effects. (The ED-209 sequences were handled by the legendary Phil Tippett. Special makeup done by the equally legendary Rob Bottin.) It was even nominated for 2 Oscars: Best Sound and Best Editing (Frank J. Urioste, whose next job was Die Hard.)

A lot of roads to go down, and the work has already been done for me. RoboDoc is an exhaustive look at all the details and day-to-day that went into the creation of Robocop. It runs nearly 5-hours, from the earliest conception of the character by writer Ed Neumeier to the attempts to franchise this very adult movie to children. Nearly every aspect of production is examined, kept interesting with stories about the unusual personalities that came together to make the film.
