Before Trilogy

Directed by Richard Linklater

Year 1995/2004/2013

I always hoped this series would continue. Before Sunrise came out right after I finished film school, nine years later I was an aimless adult working in production, but wondering if I was ever going to get it together and soon after that I was married. Happily married, which is why the big blowout of Before Midnight packed such a sting. I didn’t want it to be the last time we saw Jesse and Céline, but when After Midnight missed the expected 2022 release date, I stopped hoping.

All three movies were filmed in production-friendly cities in Europe – Vienna, Paris, Messinia and Pylos, Greece – but Before Sunset is the most interesting from a filmmaking standpoint. Taking place in real time, it’s the shortest film in the trilogy. Filmed in 15 days with minimal crew and very long takes, D.P. Lee Daniel wanted the keep the audience aware that the sun was going down because Jesse had that plane to catch in the early evening.
