#258 The Company of Wolves
Directed by Neil Jordan
Year 1984
One of the most popular lists on Letterboxd is titled Psychosexual dramas, nihilistic fever dreams & surrealism with a touch of humour, and that perfectly describes this movie. An adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood that marries the subtext to the surface, it is unlike any other movie and probably the best feature-length version of the classic tale there will ever be. It also belongs in the practical effects Hall of Fame, with make-up and movie magic that will stay in your memory forever. Angela Carter is the writer who crafted this Fantasy about sexual anxiety and fascination. The numerous encounters between girls and wolves are metaphors for all male/female relationships. Director Neil Jordan and his crew build a magical and scary world full of creepy insects, gnarled trees and careful use of the color red for a woman’s lips and splashes of blood.
