#259 Under the Shadow

Directed by Babak Anvari

Year 2016

A ghost story unmistakably rooted in American and British horror conventions gets transplanted to Iran, and this cultural difference gives Under the Shadow its own unique identity. Set amid the Iran-Iraq War, and the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution in Iran that forces a mother to abandon her medical school career. The horror places her between her professional aspirations and her sense of duty as a woman and a mother. This anxiety manifests itself in supernatural form, while the threat of actual bombing provides a physical component to the threat. There’s a nice build to the creepiness, and the final 15-20 minutes had a lot of great scares and disturbing imagery.
