Million Dollar Baby
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Year 2004
I always hoped I’d get to work on a Clint Eastwood set, even though my personality is better suited to sets that are loud and full of chaos. That’s partly the reason why, I wanted to see how a production runs when everything is quietly efficient and the director doesn’t do a lot of takes or coverage. For those who don’t know, Clint Eastwood runs the quietest sets in Hollywood. He doesn’t like noise to the point where you won’t hear the shout of “Action” on his sets, but something closer to “when you’re ready.” Actors have said this takes getting used to, but they find it easier to slide into their character. Crew also like the change-of-pace, how without the noise the projects still look cinematic. They especially appreciate how Eastwood tends to wrap early rather than fill a 12-hour workday. Once he’s got it, he’s done.
