#268 The Witches

Directed by Nicholas Roeg

Year 1990

In an unusual combination of talents, Jim Henson spent years bringing this story by Roald Dahl to the screen. It would star Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch and be directed by the avant-garde Nicholas Roeg. Roeg was the one furthest out of his element. Brought in to create an unsafe kids horror movie, he more than succeeded, and after scaring his son with an early cut of the film, Roeg knew he had to lighten the tone. The scariest part of the film are Henson’s creature and makeup effects. What was left to the imagination in Dahl’s writing is visualized in revolting detail as the witches reveal their disturbing true form.
