Adaptation
Directed by Spike Jonze
Year 2002
My reasons for wanting to work on and drawing inspiration from Adaptation are right on the surface. A meta-film about Charlie Kaufman’s attempt to adapt Susan Orlean’s “The Orchid Thief”. There’s director Spike Jonze, who makes so few movies and has built an alter-personality he presents to the public. (This allows him to humbly be one of the smartest and best filmmakers so he can get away with tricks like a behind-the-scenes still from the film that shows Nicholas Cage as both Charlie and Donald.)
Meryl Streep is in it and it’s one of her wildest performances. There’s Tilda Swinton being quite normal and Nicholas Cage, who said he ignored his usual instincts and followed Jonze’s instructions. Cameos by filmmakers like Curtis Hanson and David O. Russell and D.P. Lance Acord, who also photographed this movie. A recreation of a Robert McKee screenwriting seminar with Brian Cox as McKee. Recreating the making of Jonze’s Being John Malkovich with help from Malkovich, John Cusack and Catherine Keener.
