Scream broke the mold by having characters who were aware of Horror movies and their troupes. You can’t repeat that exact formula, but you can write a film that’s aware of all the films that came before and see what happens when you go in a different direction. You’re Next isn’t a celebration of Slasher films, but the one with an obvious name and a reliance on creepy masks hiding the fact that it knows why you’re here and it’s going to deliver the expected thrills in some original ways. It looks like The Strangers, The Purge and Ready or Not, but expectations will be subverted. Even the genre tag, it looks like a Horror film but is more of an Action Thriller. The final girl earns that label not by luck, but by being the most capable person in the house.
