Life of Pi
Directed by Ang Lee
Year 2012
The very existence of Life of Pi is hard to believe. A big budget, lots of effects and no box office names to tell a spiritual allegory that incorporates Christian, Hindu and Islamic beliefs. It reminds me of Fight Club, which was going to be made low budget if David Fincher couldn’t secure the money for all the bells and whistles the film ultimately got to use. Here the key player is Ang Lee, who seems like one of maybe three Internationally dependable filmmakers who could pull this off. He fills the screen with effects, colors and wondrous sights. It has a level of spectacle that rivals Avatar.
