#281 Dracula (1979)

Directed by John Badham

Year 1979

Much as film culture loves to discuss everyone who’s ever played James Bond or Batman, those two have nothing on Santa Claus, Sherlock Holmes, Jesus Christ and Dracula. Dracula has been in over 200 films – not just Vampires but The Count – and nearly half owe credit to Bram Stoker’s novel. Just like their legends, cinematically Dracula and Jesus Christ are immortal characters who will always be with us. This project contains 43 Dracula films, 17 in the Top 1000. This is the 6th one I have written about.

So what does this version do that’s unique? Well, nothing much really, but while it may be familiar, what it does it does really well. Sometimes you need a solid reset to remind people of the core of Count Dracula’s legend. That means Set detail and lighting that can accurately be called “exquisite”. Modern effects and music add to the convincingly gothic atmosphere. The performance by Frank Langella doesn’t go for theatrics. It’s a thoughtful and considered look at a nobleman cursed to kill and feed on others.
