Bound
Directed by The Wachowskis
Year 1996
A visually impressive and confident debut, this was always an easy sell when I worked at the Video Store because when someone asked what the movie was about I could sum it up as “lesbians versus the mob.” The Wachowskis promoted that you were going to see sexy girl-girl action, but coming at the start of their journey there was the still secret agenda that the film is not about pleasing this audience. The film’s lasting legacy is as one of the great positive LGBTQ films, a crime story focusing on two women who triumph over male criminals has appeal to lesbians, straight men, straight women and gay men. Filmmakers love the pull quote “a sexy and stylish thriller” and that description fits this movie more perfectly than any other.
