#296 The Crow

Directed by Alex Proyas

Year 1994

This is a good example of why I cast such a wide net when defining what qualifies for this list. The Crow isn’t really a Horror film and it’s more Action than Thriller, yet it’s widely accepted as both for its ghoulish take on revenge, comparable to Sleepy Hollow, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Van Helsing and the Blade films. It’s a supernatural tale where the hero gets revenge from beyond the grave and the Sets and Atmosphere are some of the purest Modern Gothic you will ever find. The breakthrough film of Alex Proyas had a visual blueprint in the comic by James O’Barr and the Gothic overlay gives the story a freshness. This is like a serious version of Batman in Gotham City, where scenes of revenge are thrilling but also sad. While legendary character actors like Michael Wincott, David Patrick Kelly, Tony Todd and Jon Polito get to chew scenery, Brandon Lee puts his heart and soul into Eric, giving what is easily the best performance in his too brief career.
