Paul Verhoeven films are as recognizable as the modern visual auteurs. You know a Verhoeven film will contain entertainingly high amounts of sex and violence, and that’s exactly what Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted for his big Summer blockbuster. A longtime fan of Verhoeven, Schwarzenegger pushed to get him on Total Recall. Verhoeven took over one of the most expensive movies ever made at that time, with many of the Department Heads that worked with him over the years. This included Rob Bottin, legendary Makeup Effects artist from The Thing, Legend and Robocop. Verhoeven and Bottin didn’t get along during Robocop, but once they saw the results there was a mutual respect. Bottin agreed to the film provided Verhoeven left him alone to handle the creature designs and Makeup effects. Verhoeven happily gave him that freedom.
