#313 Climax

Directed by Gaspar Noé

Year 2018

Loosely based on a real-life incident, a group of dancers, led by their choreographer (Sofia Boutella), gather at an abandoned building for one final rehearsal. Their opening dance is a lengthy stunner with the camera moving into the middle of the action and gliding back to take everything in full. The night dissolves into a spontaneous party, but the sangria almost everybody is drinking has been drugged. Things rapidly go downhill from there. The positivity of dance is twisted by everyone’s emotions being worked into a frenzy. The active camera, with minimal edits and the red lighting make this a hellish dance of death, with plenty of disturbing moments along the way. There’s also the mystery of who spiked the punch, with a solution that feels arbitrary at first but kept me thinking about their motives. So, that’s another level of intrigue.
