#315 Planet Terror
Directed by Robert Rodriguez
Year 2007
The Grindhouse double feature of 2007 was an interesting experiment, undone by the two films being too long for audiences and too expensive to be more than a gimmicky surface. Quentin Tarantino made the better movie with Death Proof, though the first half is incredibly talky. (It doesn’t show up for awhile.) Robert Rodriguez made the better “grindhouse” movie, an exploitation action/horror fantasia that gives a good overview of the types of characters that populate exploitation cinema. A mixture of Carpenter, Romero and Fulci, with digital grime and scratches and even a missing reel. It’s the kind of fast-moving thrill ride that used to be what you could expect from Rodriguez.
