#333 Godzilla Minus One
Directed by Takashi Yamazaki
Year 2023
Like with Batman, Godzilla currently exists in a few different unconnected forms. I knew this was unrelated to the increasingly silly Hollywood Monsterverse, but I thought it was from the people who made Shin Godzilla, which is an interesting modern-day origin story reboot for the big guy currently in the 800s on the list. Godzilla Minus One is set in postwar Japan, making it close to a remake of the first film. Filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki said he took inspiration from Spielberg and Miyazaki, and the influence of both can be found in the film’s balance of character and spectacle. With an extended production schedule due to COVID, the film was made on a budget of around $10 million dollars, and it went on to win the Academy Award for Visual Effects, (a first for a Godzilla film.) This is the scariest Godzilla has been since the original film, and it also may be the most emotional Godzilla film, thanks to characters already dealing with picking up the pieces of their lives after World War II.
