#334 The Phantom Carriage
Directed by Victor Sjöström
Year 1921
A situation where I have no passion for a highly acclaimed film on the list. I can’t even make an argument for it not being a good movie, it’s too well made on a technical level. I just don’t engage with the story, so I can only try to explain its reputation and high placement on the list. One of the earliest examples of supernatural storytelling, the way it uses film to tell a story of life, death and the space between is one of Stanley Kubrick’s favorite films. (If nothing else, modern audiences recognize a scene that resembles a famous moment in The Shining.) Ingmar Bergman also cites it as an early inspiration. The recent restoration looks great for such an old film and the use of color tinting and double exposures is very effective.
