Adapted from the novel by Stephen King, David Cronenberg’s most mainstream film contains his medical sense of sterile control with a lack of his usual kink. Christopher Walken’s gives his most normal and sympathetic performance as a man with a supernatural gift to see into the future. He exiles himself from humanity, but faces a series of challenges where he must use his gift to help save lives. Episodic story puts him in the middle of scenes involving freak accidents, a serial killer and a political madman. Cronenberg stages these fantastical and shocking visions without camera tricks, which is why their so memorable. He keeps the film centered on Walken’s journey, it’s always about how the visions affect his character. Also, really weird to see Martin Sheen post West Wing as the overly-ambitious politician.
