The Ugly Stepsister is a satire on impossible beauty standards, set in a time when medical science was still in barbaric early years. Taking inspiration from Cinderella, the main character will do anything (or be forced into it) to compete for the hand of the Prince. This is presented as something she must do to keep her family from ruin. To improve her chances, the young woman subjects herself to all kinds of experimental treatments and procedures. From a hammer and chisel nose job to a tapeworm to help lose weight, it’s all a bit… more than you expect. The body modifications are both grosser and funnier that you’re probably prepared for. Below the surface are some interesting talking points and the performances and period detail is excellent, but the surface, aided by Oscar nominated makeup effects, is what you’re going to remember.
