#365 Suspicion

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Year 1941

This can be seen as Hitchcock lite, a simple story of a woman who comes to suspect that her husband is trying to kill her. It doesn’t have the layered Gothic storytelling of Rebecca, the consistent suspense of Notorious or the emotional torture of Gaslight, but it’s as good as those similar movies because of Hitchcock and stars Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine. It’s more of a cozy mystery, with a delightful supporting cast. Unfortunately, the film is mostly known for having a last-minute change of ending that ruins the experience for many. I’ve become used to it, and have rewatched the film several times because the 90-minutes that lead to that ending are so good.
