#366 The Shout
Directed by Jerzy Skolimowski
Year 1978
Enigmatic drama of seduction and black magic. I once got asked if there’s such a thing as a one-song Musical. If the entire film builds to that big show-stopping moment, and everything after feels charted by that song, can you call it a Musical? This can be seen as a Horror with only one true scene of shock, but the terror seeps into the film’s soup, changing the flavor of the dish completely. The build-up to that shout increases dread ever so slightly, and what happens afterwards has a Mulholland Dr. brain puzzle quality to it. I’ve seen examples where this doesn’t work. there’s a film called The Maze where everything builds to the reveal that one of the characters is in fact… a giant toad. That’s an unusual idea that never properly prepares you. This is not that. The moment is fantastical but easy to believe because it’s set up so well. I didn’t quite get some of it and I don’t recommend it lightly, but I liked it.
