A common piece of advice for anyone making a Horror movie is that if you can create one incredible moment – a reveal, a mask or creature, an original gore effect – the fans will always remember your movie. It buys you a longer-lasting line of credit than you can get from any other type of movie. Today, Scanners has the pedigree of being from David Cronenberg when he was on the rise, but at the time the film was best known for one big scene. The head explosion guaranteed that Scanners would be remembered, and there were a number of similarly spectacular and sickening effects, especially at the climax. The acting is wildly uneven and it’s a film with a lot of ideas, but very little idea of what to do with them. However, the film endures because of David Cronenberg and that scene.
