#378 Race With the Devil
Directed by Jack Starrett
Year 1975
Two couples having an RV vacation through western United States find it to be a rough road when they witness a satanic ritual murder and try and get away alive. This is 70s exploitation cinema, but it’s pretty good exploitation. Maybe because it uses Satanism, Roadsploitation and Folk Horror. Maybe because it stars both Peter Fonda and Warren Oates. Despite the budget limitations, neither actor is phoning it in. They’re likable, real and when the need arises, able to fight back with great vengeance and furious anger. Speaking of, a couple of shots towards the end reminded me of Death Proof, not that Tarantino would borrow anything from a film like this.
