Zoom Chat Horror is an idea with a real small lifespan. There’s only so much you can do and the visual design is unexcitingly uncinematic. (I watch movies to get away from computer screens, though I envy how skilled some of these characters are with their internet abilities.) That said, this is one of the good ones, and the one I remember most for taking place during the pandemic, though that’s also an idea with a small window.

The film works because the performances are natural, the low expectations/budget created by the zoom chat make the effects seem pretty impressive, and this one is very, very scary. Again, it’s not doing anything new, but the use of simple paranormal magic and occasional bursts of terror coming in from the dark spaces makes up for the lack of character or story development.
