Today this would be considered elevated Horror. The plot is about a family’s wish to see their son return home from the Vietnam War. He does return, but it’s questionable if he survived. The son exhibits a lot of strange and disconnected behavior. It may be trauma from the war or it may be something supernatural. The tone nicely balances zombie drama with the symbolic look at how combat changes the dynamics between family and friends. Most scenes are a mixture of scary and sad depending on how you read into them, until events reach a conclusion that’s rather obvious, though you hope the whole movie for it not to be the truth.
