#416 Shivers
Directed by David Cronenberg
Year 1975
There are filmmakers who try to make each film different, and then there are ones like David Cronenberg who return to the same passions and interests over and over, exploring them from new angles. His breakthrough film explores connections between sex and disease. It’s about a parasite invasion that reveals itself in various scenes of body horror and skims the edge of zombies. It’s very low budget and raw, but there’s no doubting it as a Cronenberg. Who else would equate a violent physical reaction to sickness to ecstasy. Both display an involuntary loss of body control and a confusion over physical changes to ourself we don’t understand. The rough 70s look that dates it now feels ahead of its time in our post-pandemic state.
