#420 The Legend of Sleep Hollow
Directed by Jack Kinney, Clyde Geronimi
Year 1949
A pure Autumn/Halloween experience that can be seen as required viewing for any kid curious to know what it’s like to be scared. Starts as a playful, musical experience until it gets to the story of The Headless Horseman, setting the tone for the climactic ride that ends the film. Even though the finale is full of slapstick comedy, there’s absolute terror in Ichabod trying and failing to escape The Horseman. Laughs and scares come at a rapid pace building to a fiery image that for kids can be seen as peak terror. Then, like all good Horror, it eases up and sends you way with the uneasy feeling that evil is still out there…waiting.
