#436 The Curse of the Werewolf

Directed by Terence Fisher

Year 1961

Hammer Horror made only one werewolf movie, but they were fortunate enough to cast Oliver Reed, in his first major role, as the title character. The most tragic version of this legend, the film is quite sad. (The opening credits are over a close-up of Reed’s wolf eyes with tears streaming down his face.) It’s not even a werewolf movie for the first half, focusing on the horrible life of Reed’s beggar father, who is thrown into a prison and goes feral.

The makeup is unique and very well done. Hammer was great about making their low-budget films look lavish, and spending the money where it was needed most. The sets were from a scrapped movie about the Spanish Inquisition, giving this film a unique Spanish medieval flavor. A gothic tragedy with some shocking attacks.
