#440 Nosferatu (2024)

Directed by Robert Eggers

Year 2024

We are not even 500 movies in and we’ve already seen all three versions of Nosferatu. Not bad for a project that started as an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula. Each version is very different, and each one perfectly matches the overall aesthetic of the director’s body of work. The 1922 film is typical of Murnau’s visual boldness and the 1979 version focuses on Werner Herzog’s belief of mankind’s inability to control nature. The 2024 film is only Robert Eggers 4th feature, but from his debut he’s been focused on the accuracy of period details. While there’s fantasy in his stories, the costumes, makeup and props come as close as he can to what that place and time would look and feel like. At the same time, the lighting and sets match the style of early cinema, with ominous shadows and silent passages. The result is a familiar story that gets by on vibes so strong it feels like you’re watching unholy evil itself captured on film.
