#25 The Evil Dead
Directed by Sam Raimi
Year 1981
How little money can you spend and still produce a quality film? It’s a low bar Horror is often trying to fly over, and just when you think The Blair Witch Project will never be surpassed, along comes Paranormal Activity. This is why the Blumhouse model of the $5 million dollar movie is so successful. One smash hit pays for a whole lot of misses.
The Evil Dead is this type of film. Made for what looks and sounds like the budget of a Senior Thesis Film, it actually cost slightly more than John Carpenter’s Halloween, which was produced just 3 years earlier. What The Evil Dead lacks in acting talent and sound it makes up for with a lot of stylish camera technique and clever DIY special effects, including stop motion animation. With the grittiest of grit and some content that even Sam Raimi regrets now, The Evil Dead lives up to its tagline of “The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Terror” and is the definitive ‘Cabin in the Woods’ film.
