#31 The Sixth Sense
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan
Year 1999
1978 is a big year for the very best Horror/Thrillers. We’ve already had Halloween, Dawn of the Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. 1999 is up there. We’ve had Audition, The Blair Witch Project and now The 6th Sense. Sense has some of the best elements from the other two 1999 films. Of course, there’s the shock ending and a deliberate pace that gives the picture an unbearable feeling of menace.
It’s a remarkable delicate and cerebral approach from M. Night Shyamalan at the start of what’s become a B-movie career. The film has some big scares and numerous moments that make the hairs stand up, none of which is played for cheap effect. Blair Witch and Audition disturbed me, but 6th Sense has more shocks and polished technical credits. While the other two films drop you down a well, 6th Sense lowers you in so you can get a good look at the nail marks of the ones who tried to escape before you.
