#41 Frankenstein
Directed by James Whale
Year 1931
One of the early landmark Horror films. Easily more stylish than Dracula, though slightly overshadowed by its lighter and more layered sequel, Bride of Frankenstein. This mixes together some key Horror ingredients for the first time. The atmosphere is Gothic, the plot is Science Fiction with a mad scientist front and center, and the creature is a Zombie. One of the most soulful zombies ever put to screen thanks to Boris Karloff.
Karloff is going to come up a lot. I have about 50 titles on the complete list featuring him. If he wasn’t the greatest actor who worked mostly in Horror/Thrillers that’s because of Peter Cushing. As a kid, I only saw the makeup of an actor done up as the unforgettable Monster. Now, I clearly see Karloff emoting painfully through the rubber. The child of Dr. Frankenstein, who instead of acting like a father, thinks of himself as a God. He abandons his son, leaving the monster to enter the world where he is feared and rejected.
