(Principal Photography on The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was completed in 14 months.) Principal photography began in November 1996, wrapping in June 1998. Though the story takes place in New York City, the entire film was shot in England. Soundstages included a detailed recreation of Greenwich Village. How detailed? Location crew were hired to measure the width of the street and mark down the locations of newspaper vending machines.
