This one is criminally unfamiliar, so here are some credentials. It stars Michael Fassbender, Kelly Reilly and Jack O’Connell. Writer/Director James Watkins helmed the 2024 remake Speak No Evil. It’s from the Producer of The Descent and shares a number of crew that either worked on that or have worked with Danny Boyle.
Quote from Martin Teller: “This movie reinforces three of my core beliefs. 1) There’s never a good reason to go into the woods. 2) Small towns are populated by small minds. 3) Teenagers are monsters.”
This is a rough one, though not because of any graphic content. More dangerous than a bunch of thrills and scares, Eden Lake gets under the skin, filling the body with fear. Without a standout disturbing scene or gruesome image, Eden Lake does it with writing, directing and acting. That’s why this ranks so high. It starts with a basic conflict, but the way it escalates is as perfectly paced as I’ve seen. There isn’t a moment where everything turns, like The Descent or From Dusk Till Dawn. It’s a boulder picking up speed as it rolls ever downward. I wouldn’t call it relentlessly miserable, but more like a boiling pot of that starts at room temperature. The horror always increases, it never, ever cools down.
I’m more aware of Jack O’Connell, which means I’m less surprised by how good he is here, and that doesn’t make the scenes any less powerful. A few scenes would have dipped closer to torture porn sadism if not for the acting keeping everything heated. Director James Watkins starts tightening the screws pretty early and just keeps going at them right up to the final credits. For better and worse, the final scene and the final shots are easily among the best part of the film. The revelations aren’t played as twists, but that Hitchcock bomb under the table that is going to go off no matter what wire you cut. Watkins does a perfect job visually revealing the details, and then he lets the actors have at it. That’s my theory as to why you’ve probably never heard of the film, it does its job too well.
