Scarface

Directed by Brian De Palma

Year 1983

Blasted by critics in 1983 for being too excessive, especially in terms of the violence and the performance by Al Pacino. Scarface is now seen as one of the defining and most influential films of its decade. Written by Oliver Stone and directed by Brian De Palma, what initially seemed like a grotesque gangster film actually shows solid instincts for an audience to embrace despicable people who are powered by greed, power, glamour and spectacle.

Al Pacino’s performance is on its own frequency, much like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s iconic for many of the same reasons. Of course, you’d want to say you were on set for “Say Hello to my little friend.” It’s Pacino’s “You talkin’ to me” moment. I’m also interested in the moment when he’s sitting in his big chair, the cocaine is piled up on his desk and he plunges his face into the white powder.
