#87 Deathtrap
Directed by Sidney Lumet
Year 1982
“I’ll tell you how good it is. Even a gifted director couldn’t hurt it.”
A Mystery Thriller mostly set inside an old dark house with murder weapons hanging on the wall from a director who specializes in making cinematic moments out of confined spaces. The first half sets up a straightforward “perfect murder” plot, while the back half unleashes twists and double-crosses. With only a few characters, the script frequently shifts the power dynamics. Michael Caine in particular pitches between desperate and chilling. Murder(s), surprises, suspense and spooky storms that take out the power. There’s a simple shot of someone lighting a candle in darkness that gives me goosebumps because until then I didn’t think there was another person in the room. It’s a lot more meta than I remembered, but just as much fun.
