#91 Wait Until Dark
Directed by Terence Young
Year 1967
Based on a play with a simple premise of three criminals trying to get something from a blind person, Wait Until Dark ranks so high because the execution is superior to other thrillers going for frights. For similar comparisons, our list already had The Collector, which is more psychologically complex and we’re a few months away from posting about Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M For Murder. Tension builds steadily, but by the climax it’s far past where films from this era usually go and the last ten minutes is a non-stop cavalcade of horrific images and sounds involving blades, blood and intense lighting. There are a couple of silly moments – a standoff using makeshift weapons and an overacted moment of hysterics by Hepburn – but this is a serious Horror film disguised as a 60s Thriller.
