#103 Shaun of the Dead

Directed by Edgar Wright

Year 2004

This zombie rom-com came from out of nowhere with a fully developed sense of how to combine humor and filmmaking. The script is meta but layered with rich characters, working as both a homage and a deconstruction of the zombie genre. It has the references, and it has heart so that even if this is your first zombie movie, you’ll be caught up in watching a great one. And as much as the film is promoted as Shaun (Simon Pegg) trying to win over his recent ex-girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield), the real romance is with his best friend Ed (Nick Frost). Special mention to the matched long take morning walks by Shaun, one right before the zombie apocalypse and one the next morning with Shaun oblivious to all the changes.
