The Adv. of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Directed by Stephan Elliott

Year 1994

Australian cinema is rich with culture. Nothing against the more highbrow work by Peter Weir, Gillian Armstrong and Jane Campion, but I’m more interested in visions by George Miller, Baz Luhrmann and Jennifer Kent. From this splashy side, ever so briefly existed Stephan Elliott. I got onboard with Elliott with 1993’s Frauds starring Phil Collins and Hugo Weaving and exited with 1999’s Eye of the Beholder, starring Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd. In between was Priscilla, which introduced me to Guy Pearce, the Australian outback and drag culture. It features a remarkable amount of visual cheek, including Oscar winning Costume Design by Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel, and a Top Shelf performance by legend Terence Stamp.
