#136 Gremlins

Directed by Joe Dante

Year 1984

Produced by Steven Spielberg and more subversively horrific than Poltergeist. At least that is being sold as a haunted house movie. This one puts cute little gizmo front and center. Even if you know about the more rambunctious Spike, you might not be aware of how vicious he gets. Even if you know that, you probably don’t know how many of his kind emerge from the shadows in a goosebumps shot that let you know things are about to descend into chaos. Even then, there’s the kitchen battle with its gooey effects and how fearlessly the script by Chris Columbus goes out of its way to ruin Christmas. Starts out friendly, but turns mean and even ugly. A great gateway Horror because this is where you learn how a Horror film can attack the comfort and security you normally have with a movie. Many people my age prefer the even more bonkers sequel, which is coming up in less than 100 films.
